Spotlight on Plantar Fasciitis

By Jane Rohan, Lic Ac , Dipl. Ac

Plantar fasciitis, or plantar heel pain, also known as jogger’s heel, is a condition that effects approximately 10 percent of people at some point in their lives. According to studies, 4% to 7% of the general population has heel pain and approximately 80% of those cases can be attributed to plantar fasciitis. Although the cause is unknown, it is said to be associated with an inward rolling of the foot and a tight Achilles tendon. People with this condition complain of a sharp pain, usually apparent with the first steps in the morning. Other reported symptoms are numbness, tingling, swelling and radiating pain.

According to a study in the Singapore Medical Journal (February 2017), acupuncture was shown to significantly reduce the pain in those suffering from plantar fasciitis.

My own experience in clinic is that people feel immediate relief and improvements with continued treatments. When patients modify their activity and include support of the underlying heel rotation, results are even better.
